I have heard that story a couple of times and it is a fun tale but after hearing it more than once I started to think about the speed and distances. What do the aviation Oppo’s think?

Na utical and regular miles probably get mixed up below but lets just say the distances are close enough for Oppo.

If the Blackbird was traveling at 2000 miles an hour, for the duration of that discussion, even if the speed checks were called in as quickly as relayed in the story (see video below) , I think the plane would have traveled 130 miles (4 mins at 2000mph). Not knowing anything about air traffic control I googled to see what distances impact air traffic control. First part is that they are generally responsible (and the first tier G oogle result could be wrong) for 10-15 nautical miles. Then due to curve of the earth regular radio , depending on terrain probably cuts out after about 125 miles.

I guess the SR-71 flies really high up so maybe they had such a conversation?  IDK, seems like a fun story,  but a bit of a stretch.

Tower reports I’m running at about 0 mph indicated ground speed.

Funny how I’ve re- told people that story, but now somehow my version includes a G4 in between the Beechcraft and the F-18. lol

It would depend on the size of the airport the tower is from I think, and also the area covered can widen with altitude—I know for instance that Toronto’s control zone can be flown under within the city, but covers a pretty substantial distance once you cross a certain threshold.

Remember these guys are tracking commercial flights a long way out even if they’re not directly controlling them. And even then, one leg of a holding pattern alone is probably at least 120KM, and final approach could be an easy 50KM.

It’s tight, maybe, but doable.
